Literacy and Arts at Near North Magnet Cluster Schools

Chicago Lights Literacy and Arts at the Near North Magnet Cluster Schools (NNMC) supports learning and creative self-expression through literacy and arts programs for nearly 1,000 students in the two Cabrini-Green public elementary schools (Jenner Academy of the Arts and Manierre School).

Professional artists teach drama and dance classes throughout the school year which uncover talents, build self-esteem and confidence, and increase the desire of students to apply themselves in school. Tutors also volunteer to work in the classrooms during the day to assist teachers in classrooms that have up to 37 students in each class.

Developed in 2000, this program is directed by Diana Anton. For the past ten years, students, who met their reading goals at year-end, had the opportunity to perform in an annual fine arts production called Festival of the Heart. This school year, the Festival is discontinued and arts and literacy initiatives are changing to better serve the students.

"The biggest draw for us to Chicago Lights, both as volunteers and benefactors, has been the sense of being apart of a strong community that inspires others and leads by example.

Chicago Lights has allowed both of us to share the gifts we have been so blessed with while gaining new perspective on the challenges our community faces."
