Literacy Initiatives

Literacy is our primary academic focus in the Tutoring Program. At the beginning of each Tutoring year, students take our online reading assessment, Lets Go Learn. Tutors receive a detailed report outlining their student's level in the areas of phonics, word recognition, high frequency words, oral vocabulary, spelling and reading comprehension. The report also includes specific techniques and activities tutors can use to enhance reading skills.

Our reading and writing incentive projects encourage and motivate students to read and write - a lot! Reading Rewards is for 1st - 6th graders and provides activities in the areas of phonics, spelling, vocabulary, comprehension and reading for pleasure. Student and tutor pairs work on assignments in these areas and students earn points for their completion. Three times a year students "shop" at our very own "Tutoring Store" where students use their points to buy items such as stickers, pencils, books, arts supplies, Mp3 players, sports equipment and dolls.

wRAP (Write, Read, Achieve, Prevail), for 7th - 12th grade students, includes grade appropriate literacy assignments, but also offers Book Club and Writer's Circle, an open and engaging writing community. Students earn points that they can redeem for gift cards and other prizes. The highest point earners win a ticket for our end of the year Great America trip.

Through a generous donation made by Executive Women International, the Tutoring Program offers the Hooked on Phonics program. We have seen reading skill growth up to 80% in students who utilize this program with their tutor.

"The biggest draw for us to Chicago Lights, both as volunteers and benefactors, has been the sense of being apart of a strong community that inspires others and leads by example.

Chicago Lights has allowed both of us to share the gifts we have been so blessed with while gaining new perspective on the challenges our community faces."
