Students Travel to Colorado to Learn Teambuilding and Problem Solving Skills

On August 10, 2009, Chicago Lights Tutoring sent 11 students enrolled in Job Training & Career Development to Winter Park, Colorado to attended a Youth Leadership Retreat at Snow Mountain Ranch.

Students to a teambuilding exerciseStudents participated in a 3-day program full of teambuilding and problem solving activities. The activities encouraged leadership, integrity and maintaining a positive attitude. Each student was able to test their ability to step out of their comfort zone by participating in a high ropes course, zip lining and mountain hiking. Students also had down time to enjoy other activities Snow Mountain Ranch offers: swimming roller skating, indoor rock climbing and craft making.

"I'm glad I tried everything", said Siedah, a recent graduate and five-year Job Training participant. "I never thought I would like anything. It was all a great experience."

Students Helping each other with Jacob's LadderFor many of our students, this was their first time being away from the city and the first time being on an airplane.

"One of my fears was heights," Pierre admitted. "I'm proud of myself because I pushed myself on the high ropes and now I realize I should always try new things. I've also learned how to become more dependable and trust people more."

"The biggest draw for us to Chicago Lights, both as volunteers and benefactors, has been the sense of being apart of a strong community that inspires others and leads by example.

Chicago Lights has allowed both of us to share the gifts we have been so blessed with while gaining new perspective on the challenges our community faces."
