Tutoring Student Goes to College on Full Scholarship

During her years as a Chicago Lights Tutoring student, which began in the second grade, LaFaye Garth has practiced her career skills and interned with Job Training; she's served as treasurer, vice president, and president of the Student Leadership Council; and she has earned excellent grades with help from Kate Killeen, her tutor for the last 7 years. LaFaye graduates Roger C. Sullivan High School this spring with a 4.31 GPA.

She explains how the Chicago Lights Tutoring Program has impacted her: "It's having somewhere to come -- a positive environment where I can identify with other students, and we can learn from each other and share experiences. The help there is unlimited."

In addition to Tutoring, LaFaye has kept herself busy with school activities including National Honor Society, Best Buddies, an organization that provides opportunities for students to work with individuals with intellectual disabilities, cheerleading, track, and Principal's Scholars.

In return for all this hard work, she has received a Posse Foundation scholarship, which covers four years of tuition at a partner school. She has also been chosen as a Gates Millennium Scholar, an honor that will provide funding for her remaining school expenses. "My mom is overwhelmed," says LaFaye. "She's very thankful and happy."

In the fall, she will attend Pomona College in Claremont, California and is planning to study biology, because she's interested in science and would eventually like to be a general practice doctor.

LaFaye admits to feeling a little anxious about college. She and her sister LaMonica, another former Tutoring student who graduated last year and now studies nursing at Chicago State University, are the first in their family to attend college. "But I'm pretty much optimistic," LaFaye adds. "In the back of my head I know it's going to be a challenge, but I'm not afraid. I'm ready."

We know she's ready and we wish her all the best!

"The biggest draw for us to Chicago Lights, both as volunteers and benefactors, has been the sense of being apart of a strong community that inspires others and leads by example.

Chicago Lights has allowed both of us to share the gifts we have been so blessed with while gaining new perspective on the challenges our community faces."
