A key component of Chicago Lights Tutoring is Job Training and Career Development -- an opportunity for high school students to gain insight into the working world and explore potential careers. And as participating students learn, a big part of success in the business world is dressing appropriately for a professional environment.
Recently, 22 job training students demonstrated their knowledge -- and strutted their stuff -- in a professional wardrobe fashion show. "The students have been learning about professional image, specifically business casual and business formal dress codes in the workplace," explained Tanya Uyigue, youth programs coordinator for Tutoring. "We have gone over the dos and don'ts of workplace attire and discussed how what we wear can send messages to people about who we are -- whether we like it or not."
The students wore their own clothing, and although some of them were nervous, "as soon as the house music came on and they saw that runway they got into it!" Tanya said. Running commentary on all fabulous, workplace-appropriate ensembles was provided by Alex Cornwell, associate director of Tutoring.
The panel of judges awarded prizes of gift cards to H&M and Express to Daysy Laureano for best business formal look and Torrin Allen for best business casual.
"Events like this make learning more enjoyable, and I think it really helps these kids build their confidence and self-esteem," said Tanya.
Not only was the fashion show fun, it served the practical purpose of giving students a trial run at dressing for their summer internships. And speaking of internships: we need your assistance!
Would your workplace host a high school student this summer?
The goals of the Job Training internships are to introduce students to business environments and to provide experience performing entry-level tasks and receiving feedback from their supervisors.
