Chicago Lights Urban Farm

In Collaboration with Growing Power

Chicago Lights Urban Farm empowers youth and community residents, in the Cabirni-Green neighborhood ,to have increased economic opportunities through access to organic produce, nutritional education and work force training.

Chicago Avenue has been the site for a community garden in the Cabrini-Green neighborhood since 2003, where one Chicago Lights program has been basing its work. This year, a new mission to expand this site into an Urban Farm will be implemented through an expanded relationship between Chicago Lights and Growing Power, a nonprofit organization empowering communities by helping to provide equal access to healthy, high quality, safe, and affordable food.

Hoop greenhouses (pictured left) will be installed in the winter and extend the growing season to 9-12 months. The Urban Farm will also provide job training and youth development so that youth may gain knowledge about life skills and job readiness, as well as, agriculture. Families will learn about nutrition and have access to affordable, healthy produce. Relationships in the community will continue to be fostered as people of diverse backgrounds work side by side and enjoy community celebrations together.

There will still be a handful of personal garden plots that can be managed by neighborhood residents who live within a five block radius of the farm. If you live within that radius, you can inquire about plots at the farm, beginning May 8th. If you don't fall in that category, you are still welcome and needed to help the farm and its mission succeed.

Chicago Lights Urban Farm in the News!
Chicago Lights Urban Farm was recently featured in an article in Newcity as one of the many urban farms around the city that are working at the intersection of sustainable food and low-income communities. Read the full the article, "The Garden Party: the dirt on Chicago's resurgent 'Urbs in Horto' movement," by Ella Christoph, by clicking here.

Carmen Carvi created the video below as a submission for the One Chicago One Nation film contest in Spring 2010. At the time of the filming, the Chicago Avenue land was used as a community garden, yielding produce during the summer season only. The garden is now a year-round food producing urban farm and provides healthy, affordable food for the residents of the surrounding Carbini neighborhood.

"The biggest draw for us to Chicago Lights, both as volunteers and benefactors, has been the sense of being apart of a strong community that inspires others and leads by example.

Chicago Lights has allowed both of us to share the gifts we have been so blessed with while gaining new perspective on the challenges our community faces."
